On June 15, 2018 a roller coaster at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk derailed and two (2) riders fell 34 feet when their roller coaster car was left dangling from the track. We remember when the incident occurred and, because as far as we knew, the amusement facility at the Daytona Beach Boardwalk was not a facility with 1,000 full-time employees and and in-house safety inspectors, we awaited the Department of Agriculture Report, because in Florida this is the department that regulates these kinds of amusement facilities.

On July 11, we read in our local paper that investigators from the Department of Agriculture determined that the operating speed was the primary cause of the derailment. Adam Putnam (who is running for governor of Florida) said that the department has issued subpoenas to obtain more information about the ride operator and that they intend to hold the responsible parties accountable.

According to the investigation, apparently there had been previous derailments which had not been reported to the state. If this is true it is very sad and illustrates the danger that sometimes innocent consumers unknowingly confront here in Florida.
